Similarities and Differences

As artists we get images in our head that are sometimes a lot alike. I am not sure if we file away the images which we have seen. Or if it is in fact that we have similar sensitivities and compositional knowledge, and find our work comes very close to looking like another artist.

I did a short search and found the following images, similar to a still life that I completed a year ago. It was fun to see the different color sense, brush work, and compositions that are quite similar.

In my still life set up, I worked from life. I spread out multiple candies across a table. I attempted to do four, that could be hung horizontal in a line, or a group of the four. I wanted the story to move from one canvas to the next. I was successful with three, but the fourth, missed it's mark somewhere. I would like to try that again. But right now I am watching my sweets :D

I do wonder if the other artists, worked from life or a photo. If they created a story in any way, or prepped the product to fit the composition.

In searching for these images I even found reference to a prison inmate that uses the color from the candy as his palette. Hair from his head, aluminum foil, and plastic for his brush. Check this article out on Donny Johnson's art.

I hope you have fun seeing the similarities and the differences in the same subjects.

BTW - this last image is a photograph. It appears to be a sign, perhaps where the candy is manufactured.... though I don't know.

I have begun to read about the Fine Artist's guide to getting into galleries and selling more art, in Jason Horejs' book, "Starving" to Successful.

Reconfirming some of what I already knew, yet in Chapter 6... a revelation. Pricing for website, pricing for shows, pricing for galleries... all had me quite frustrated and confused. Jason cleared that all up in three paragraphs.

Suggestions for my website, and the possibility of a redesign to come.

I just signed this painting today.

Working very hard to wrap up some loose ends here in my studio,

so that I can begin a few new ideas that have been waiting to be explored.

I loved painting this watercolor with the variety of oranges, rusts, and golds.

The different shapes and colors of the pumpkins, reminds me of the unique characteristics of each family member that gathers round the table during the holidays.

I have seen a collection of the work on Randy Higbee's facebook page, and this show is definitely worth a drive to Costa Mesa to see. Over 150 artists from around the globe have submitted work. There are over 300 paintings hung, with more waiting to take their places.

Who knew how many colors of orange are in a pumpkin.

I was holding back on painting the gold silk, with it's embroidery and folds.

However, I just jumped in one edge and it has been flowing ever since.

This image finishes out the four paintings I have entered into a 6x6 competition at the Randy Higbee Gallery. This is going to be a great event. The opening reception will be December 4th, and I am told it will run through December. So if you are interested in picking up a small jewel as a Christmas present, I suggest you make your way down to Costa Mesa. Randy also might be posting the images online. I will check on that. Though I do suggest you have the pleasure of meeting Randy. He himself is a gem.

Max 4/09-11/10

It has been a sad an lonely weekend. Our little guy Max had to be put to rest. I found out he had feline leukemia. I am not sure this is what took us to the vet on Friday night. Yet the x-ray showed that some type of a mass was cutting off his air passage and lung capacity, so he was in a bit of respiratory distress.
I think he knew something was happening all day, because he remained very close to me. It was a hard decision, but one that I know was the right one.

He was a good little guy. Quite timid, but learned that I was his friend and was tolerant of my advances. He lost his sister a few months back. He let her out the sliding screen door, and she never returned. We live in coyote country, so... the end of the story is fairly clear to us.

Recently Max had stopped playing fetch, or if he did, he sauntered over to the item he was expected to chase. I thought he was just depressed, but now I know... he just didn't have the energy.

He was loved and will be greatly missed.

Here are two that are close to being finished. A tweak here, a tweak there,
and I can then submit them.

I planned out my composition prior to having purchased the sweets. Each mini painting is a part of a larger image. I hope that you can see the interconnections.

The first two are set aside, so that they can dry a bit. Then I can do a quick touch up here and there, on the details.

I am also setting up a still life for some small 6x6" panels. Yet it is so beautiful outdoors I am tempted, to pack up my paints and .... So wonderful to have choices.

New Mother 20x15" charcoal on Rives

After many years of being fearful of figure drawing, and hesitating to add it to my skill sets, I believe I have overcome one of the obstacles that has challenged me. This morning... much to my surprise, I found myself listed on a figure drawing blog.

Today, I am not able to head off to a figure workshop. The check engine light is brightly lit on my car dash and I don't want to take the chance. So, I plan on working a bit more on this drawing, to see if I can pull her form through the paper. It is a rainy day here in CA, so I see this as an inviting opportunity. What is so wonderful about Rives BFK paper is that if I go off course, I can always wipe it down, add more charcoal, and begin again.

This is a fun process for me. Working with kneaded eraser, then a charcoal pencil, on a charcoal ground, I push and pull the darks and lights. If one area isn't going as planned, I can take the chamois that has charcoal dust on it, and I wipe the area back, and begin lifting the lights again. It also helps to step away from the work from time to time in order to get some perspective on the subject. I tend to get lost in the texture of the paper, and need a break to see the form from a distance.

This particular drawing began slightly different last week. I usually have a second sheet of paper under the piece I am working on, to add padding. Otherwise, I see the hard surface of the board come through to the paper surface. I also was working with smaller pieces of compressed charcoal than I normally do, to lay in my dark ground. So far, I think I am turning two negatives into a positive.

Now, if only I could get this little guy to pose for me.

Recent work I have completed for a local juried show. Unfortunately, I finished only one of them by the deadline. I am going to complete two more, to make a second card series. What is fun about these two shops is that they are places where my family frequented, when the kids were small, to have ice cream and coffee. I am going to finish the series with this in mind.

Opposite Ends

Working at opposite ends of my studio the last couple of days. When I get tired of brushwork, I can turn to pencil. When I am tired of black and white, I can turn to color.

Challenging myself with value issues. Working at creating depth on a two dimensional surface, certainly can be a workout.

The painting is signed. As for the charcoal... it will be a while longer.

I am still thinking about a title for this shadow work. I captured it one day while working at the Los Angeles Arboretum. I usually enjoyed plein-air painting there, with my artist friends, but this day I was adventurous and taped a full sheet of the scrumptious Rives BFK paper to a board. I had already been quite successful with a few other shadows, which can be seen here. I wanted to see if I could push the idea a bit more.

I found an interesting shadow to capture, but it meant that I was actually crouched down under a few bushes. I am sure I was an odd sight. After I arrived home I set the drawing in the drawer, and worked on other work. I have been taking my time through unfinished work and this drawing called out to me. We shall see where it takes me... there is quite a ways to go.

I painted a range of blues today. The laces still need to be moved in and out of the light, by pushing them over and under each other. But I decided to back off of them for now. I also took a fresh white pair of sneakers and wore them out quickly. I know they were worn daily at Lacrosse camp, so they definitely have a few miles on them.

I will reach and pull out the last sneaker tomorrow, and then I am home free to paint the sticks. The detail of the netting will be fun... I think.

Today, I have been painting dark colors and attempting to prioritize my values as they move in and around the forms. Sometimes subtle, other times sharp value changes. I have the urge to paint the lacrosse sticks. I am holding back though, to paint the less glamorous forms first. The metal surface will take a steady hand.

Weekend in The Hampton's

Every summer we go to New York, so that my husband can meet up with eight of his childhood friends. Our weekend centers around "The Boys" challenging each other to basketball, tennis, bocce ball, soccer, and what-is-the-name-of-that-song. The beach is nearby, and there is pool to cool down after a workout. There is plenty for the wives and teens to do, after cheering "The Boys" on.

Of course this means a wide variety of shoe attire is needed. I love the scattered footwear near the door. It changes often throughout the day. My painting captures a part of the foyer where the shoes are removed.

I am sharing my painting as a work in progress. I hope that what I have in my mind's eye, will be created on the paper. Stay tuned...

I went to the Randy Higbee Gallery today and was able to do a drawing of the lovely model,
Toni Czechorosky. I need to tweak a few values here and there, but I am actually quite pleased with this results, since I have only been working seriously on figure drawing for the past year.

Drawing or painting a model can be challenging. Each time the model takes a break, the placement of an arm, twist of the back, angle of the face, drape of the fabric, can be slightly different. It takes a patient model to work with all the artists, to find a compromise that is satisfactory to all.

Toni, told a story about how she was given this vintage outfit from her aunt's estate. The cutout lace trim on the silk jacket was beautiful. The cut of the silk shorts was also unique. I wanted to study them closer, but I decided that was far too personal. Vintage clothing was crafted with great care. That is why it is still wearable today.

I recently had some of my charcoal drawings professionally photographed. I am always so pleased with the results when I spend the extra money to do this.

ArtWorks Fine Art Publishing in Los Angeles, on Avenue 64, are wonderful to work with. My projects are always completed and ready for pick up when they say they will be. I receive the images, both as a HI, and a LO resolution, on a CD.

With these digital files I was able to upload to Imagekind an online print house. Quickly I received a few test greeting cards in the mail. Their matte finish, looks like a mini charcoal drawing. Each card comes in its own sleeve with envelope. Very impressive if I do say so myself.

Ideas are floating in my head.

I have been having a wonderful time at Randy Higbee's Open Studio for Artists on Wednesday evenings. He has lovely models, and quite a lot of room. This accommodates many artists and many different views.

This past week we were treated to roasted potatoes in truffle oil, roasted beets, baked beans, cabbage and strawberry salad, wine and cheese. A quick nibble and back to work, until the next model break. All the while listening to Randy's assortment of music he chooses for the occasion.

It is a fun time, and a great way to meet new artists. You can also frame work, since Randy is the King of Frames.

I had a wonderful day yesterday painting with Michael Newberry at Palisades Park.
The weather was lovely. Quite a relief from the 100º we have been having in the San Gabriel Valley.

These four works were done with a method that is quite fun. You find a color in the shadow and use that as an under painting. The next step is to wipe out the lights in the view as best you can, going back to a clean panel for the brightest lights.

My goal was to attempt to leave with four paintings by the end of the day. When plein air painting, it is never a good idea to spend more than 2 hrs maximum on a view, since the light changes so quickly. It was helpful to focus on one aspect of a painting, I wanted to communicate.

A recent move, downsizing, after the baby left home for college, allowed me the opportunity to paint their new house. I really enjoyed painting their new home. The architecture is so gracious. You see details in these period homes that are not typical in today's construction. The beautiful front yard is enclosed by a tall hedge, lush landscaping and a quaint courtyard. So it was necessary to have a closer perspective than I usually paint.

The homeowner was allowed a quick peak before I had it photographed at, Art Works Fine Art Publishing . She was thrilled, so tomorrow I am excited to deliver it framed. She plans on it being a surprise for her husband. I find this happening more often with the Home Portraits. It is a unique way to say thank you. I can't wait to hear what her husband says.

Aligned Partners

I began this pastel last night at Randy Higbee's Open Studio. A great evening for artist's to meet up, be creative, and share a few stories along the way.

The set up was created for a group, so it is rare that you find yourself placed with the best view. I realized after I began that the two roses, and the nectarines happened to be lined up down the center of my composition. Thus my title - Aligned Partners. I think this compositio works, because the other two roses and grapes, create a nice diagonal which keeps the eye moving around the vase.

I had fun with this still life, because it is not a set up I would normally paint.

I had the opportunity yesterday to go to Randy Higbee's Open Studio. There were approximately 20 painters from around SoCA. Randy had arranged for two models, one nude and one clothed. He also had placed a still life arrangement against one of his moveable walls. As I am not quite comfortable painting figures quickly, I signed up to paint the still life. I had a lovely time meeting artists I have "friended" on Facebook, and being a part of Randy's gracious open studio.

I titled this painting Introductions, because it reminds me of how lovely it can be, to meet new people, in an unfamiliar environment.

I pulled out a canvas that had been started a while back. It is from an image that I captured at my daughter high school, after they had finished a renovation of the campus. Most high schools are designed without much thought to aesthetics. The four schools in this district were lucky enough to have that as one of their priorities. I wanted to do a few paintings in honor of the generous donations on the part of the community to help see this construction to completion.

This is the first of three that I have planned. This painting is at the point where I am adjusting the colors of each shape. I am thinking this might take a while...

Working from a set up I prepared for a recent pastel, I decided to create a drawing on light blue Canson paper. I have admired other realistic charcoal drawings done at the Waichulis Studio. Many use a light blue Canson and get beautiful results. I bought this paper a few months back, and decided it was a perfect time to try something new.

I love the fluidity of this composition. Folds are a challenge because of the rise and fall of the fabric, while keeping the softness of the material, pushing and pulling the values.

I love how the three buds look like they are asking the beautiful dancer for the next dance. These flowers are so graceful. They are called Paeonia 'Krinkled White'. They are planted in our town along the downtown parkway.

I painted this for an upcoming show at Segil Fine Art. I should hear in a couple of weeks if the three works on paper were accepted.

I just finished this pastel. Drawing the vase was enjoyable, without putting much time into the vase itself. I looked through it. Creating edges with all the folds of the fabric actually helped in creating the shape of the glass. I love the curves on this vase.

The bouganvilla clippings, looked to me like the flowers on a spring hat.

Yesterday I did a direct painting of a few loquots off of our tree. I had never tasted this fruit before and I am quite impressed with its flavor. My little friend Ellis encouraged me to try it. She was sure I would like it's flavor. Indeed I did. Now I am looking for ways to use it in recipes, as the tree is bursting with ripe fruit. Do you have a favorite recipe you could share?

We had this bouquet on our kitchen table for my son's 21st birthday. It put a smile on my face for many days. I love spring in SoCA. There is an explosion of color everywhere. I have my eyes on some hollyhocks down the street.

There is a lemon tree in my back yard that is covered with lemons. In fact the branches are bent over with the weight of the numerous fruit. At the same time the newspapers are filled daily with stories about Toyota.

Baby Steps

I know how frustrating it is to return often to a blog which has not been updated in weeks. However, as an artist, sometimes growth needs to occur on the inside. This tends to leave incomplete thoughts to share. I have been listening to my heart, to figure out how to move forward, with all that I want to accomplish. I often stop in my tracks when my creative ideas want to race in too many directions. I need to pull back and realize that it is rather simple.
Baby Steps. So much can be accomplished in 15 minutes. At least I am further along than if I did nothing for those 15 minutes. In the end it does matter, because it all adds up.

I realize when I hit a brick wall, if I am patient, a hand usually appears to lift me up over it. Or the light shines on the path so that I can find my way around it. There is no doubt in my mind, that walls will continue to show up along the journey. It is empowering to know that obstacles are what makes being creative so incredibly rich.

There is freedom in understanding others are going to be there to encourage my journey. I was given this gift, to lift up others through my vision, as I am lifted by their passion. My training has given me the strength to know I can do whatever I put my mind to. Yet, I can not be "all", and I can not be in" all places". If I am going to use the gift, that I was given, I have to let go of some of the voices in my head. Listening is good, but at times you have to tell some of those voices that, "Now is not the time". It can be compelling to jump into new waters, but the energy to complete the new tasks at hand are not available Much better to support those that are trained to swim those waters, to reach the other side. My commitment is to my self, my goals, my visions. I have been told that my art touches people in profound ways. I enter this next decade with the goal to share the best work that I can.

These boots were home on leave, and so I took the liberty to draw them. Unfortunately they needed to pack up and move on before I was able to finish the pastel. They belong to a new United States Marine. I am sure they will return again.

Two Paintings and a Couple Pastels

My work done last weekend still needs a tweak or three. I thought I might post them prior to the tweaks, just in case I don't "nail it".

What a wonderful weekend I had.
I arrived after a long drive from Los Angeles, and was greeted in Marin by my dear friends Vicki and Paul. The dinner that they shared with me - pistachio crusted fish and potato gratin, topped off with a chocolate-chip pumpkin muffin, was worth driving 7 hrs for. I adore these folks. They have been in my life for 24 years. Nice to be able to say that.

After a good cup of coffee the next morning I was on my way out to Point Reyes. So many memories were flooding back. I use to take my two boys on jaunts here when we lived in Marin. Passed the famed Lucas Skywalker Ranch, the town of Nicasio. With each turn of the road I was in heaven. This is truly some of the most spectacular parts of the world. It beats Italy in my book... but then again I love California.

I followed the instructions to the hostel, but we were not allowed to check in until 4:30 yet we were meeting at the beach picnic tables at 9:30. There were only four of us early birds, so we found a spot to set up and were on our own for the rest of the day. I did my first warm-up facing the cliffs of Drakes Beach. You can see Chimney Rock at the very tip of the peninsula. The weather was spectacular and life couldn't be better.

I decided to move on about noon, as the light was drastically different. Narrowing down the next spot proved to be quite difficult. I thought I would like to do something back in Point Reyes Station, but the light was quiet flat at this time of the day. So I continued to drive. I found many possible places to set up, but nothing really grabbed me. In fact while waiting for the light to change I closed my eyes. I was glad I did, after chatting until almost midnight the night before. I then decided to drive back toward the Nicasio Resevoir because it had always been one of those locations that when I came around the bend it made me take a deep breath. I wanted to feel that again. The light was really pretty on the water and so I decided to set myself up with a pastel study. I really enjoyed this spot, but the light went behind the mtn behind me quicker than I expected and so I packed up and headed back to the hostel. It was time to check in.

Bunkbeds were the order of the day at the hostel. I had requested a women's only room, and when I arrived the bottom bunks had already been spoken for. This was going to prove to be my only challenge of the weekend. I learned I do not sleep well with 10 others breathing in the same room (you might read that as "snoring" but don't say that I said so). Sleep was difficult and the back of my Volvo wagon beckoned me.

We had a fantastic dinner. I think there were about 30 people checked in, and I had not met any of them prior to the event. How fun that Art had brought us all together.

We set out independently the next morning. Again, the list of options was so great it was difficult to choose where the perfect spot would be. Back again to the town, and I considered a few views, but drove on to the town of Inverness, CA. I happened to see a few other artists painting the Tomales Bay. I just did not want to paint the expected views. I turned the car around, and OMG the trees were golden in the light. This was the spot. There was a wonderful place to pull my car over so that I was not in any ones way. This was a side street, with two of the sweetest homes. I was into my work, when someone walked up to me. She was the restaurant owner of Vladimir's and she said it just made her day to look out and see me painting. She offered me a hot cup of coffee and we both had smiles on our faces when she left to go back to her kitchen.

I continued to paint until the light had changed so much that I would chance making mud of my work. So I packed up and drove back to the hostel. Snacked on some lunch at Limatour Beach. Closed my eyes again, knowing that the night would not be an easy one again. Then realized I needed to find a grocery store to bring my dinner to barbeque.
When I finally made my way back to the hostel, I searched for something to remind me of the weekend. I took out my pastels once again and was captured by the colors near where the hostel's manager lived. A gorgeous red rust roof, next to a shed with turquoise siding, citron colored moss on the roof, and the light created abstracted shapes all over the structure. Again not finished, but the process for me is what is so enjoyable. Chris came to keep me company and pulled out her sketchbook and we created and visited without having to say very much. A great ending to the day.

Sterling somehow was anointed our chef for the evening. He deserved to share my mango salsa. It was a wonderful dinner. About half of the group decided to take a walk down to the beach in the full moonlight. I was enjoying my spot on the couch, and learning more about the group I was talking with. I was also thinking that couch sure looked better than the back of my car. That is a whole other story....

The next morning was a hustle and bustle of coffee making, packing, cleaning, and sharing our work. Richard had arranged for two great Sennelier paint sets to be given away. Thankfully no voting, just a name out of the hat and the winners were quite pleased. I said my good byes while the others were still sharing stories. Obviously not wanting the wonderful weekend to come to an end a minute too soon. However, I had another cup of coffee waiting for me, at my host's home, back in Lucas Valley. Then off to lunch with another friend of 25 yrs in San Anselmo. What a great way to set foot into the month of November. I treasure these moments. I hugged Nancy this time, and filled my tank, and headed off back down through the Central Valley.

If you don't know what is happening in the San Joaquin Valley, I suggest you take a moment to check it out. This is the only part of the weekend that made me sad. I have family that farms here. I spent many vacations at my grandparents farm as a child. So it is quite emotional for me, to see nothing but dirt along the hwy. I hope that the family farms can recover from the battle over water.

CAC Limantour Beach Paint Out

I head out tomorrow morning to make my way up the coast to Point Reyes Station. One of my very favorite spots in the San Francisco Bay Area. I will be painting with 40-60 (not sure of the final numbers) other artists that were invited by the NoCA Chapter of the California Arts Club.

Point Reyes Hostel

We will be staying at the hostel in Point Reyes, but the options of sites to paint each day are limitless. I might have difficulty returning home. I have been packed and ready to go for two days now. I have a new pochade to work with from Artwork Essentials, Inc. and 9"x12" single primed linen panels from Raymar Art. I am ready to go!

I also have fit in some time to visit with special friends while in Marin. What a great way to start November. I also just learned that my son will be stationed at USMC Miramar, CA. So right there, I have the opportunity of more painting expeditions. It is going to be a good month, I can tell.

I am working on the golden tissue. With each plane of the tissue that is turning a different direction from the light source creates another color challenge. Also I am working on keeping the depth of the box, by making the front of the box feel a mile away from the the far side. I want the viewer to feel like s/he can climb right in. We shall see....

I am continuing to lay color down, tweaking one next to another. Following my studies, and not losing the form that was created by the grisaille. I am waiting to paint the tissue. Most likely because I want it to be fresh, and true to the colors that I originally saw when I began. Two of the boxes have intricate designs. I don't want to be distracted when I begin. It is a slow process, but I am able to see progress after each sitting.

This painting has been very patient with me. As I return to it once again, it has whispered to me, now is the time for color. The time is right to finish it, and honor the story. Though, I do realize it will not be a quick finish. Yet, anything worth doing is worth taking time to do.

Remember... pack your memories away, safely. One day, you will treasure them more than you thought possible.

I am painting over the grisaille. This is an under-painting done with yellow ochre, raw umber, black and white. Adding color with a mixture of linseed oil, dammar varnish, and thinner.

I have just had the most lovely morning. I found a blog that will take more than just one morning to read. What I have read so far, was a delight.

A Bloomsbury Life by Lisa Borgnes Giramonti
(click on her blog header for the current post. I think this image is spectacular).

Lisa is so clever with her words, and the images that she posts are an inspiration to go on my own hunt for similar treasure. I found myself many times wishing I was where she was standing, and instead of a camera, I envisioned myself painting.

She offers glimpses into her personal life. Relationships adored, a son that brings a smile to a stranger, and travel logs that make you want to book a flight.

I have bookmarked this treat, to savor over time. I am sure the linked blogs will also allow for more discoveries. Enjoy!

I have been getting my feet wet again. Beginning figure drawing workshops at Michael Newberry's new studio. He has quickly found some wonderful models, and the workshops have a waiting list.

Here I have posted two longer poses. These help me to make a more studied understanding of the form. As much as I enjoy the quicker poses for my eye/hand coordination, the longer poses allow me to learn the form without the ticking of the clock in my mind.

I attended a very nice Artist Reception yesterday at the Viva Gallery, in Sherman Oaks, CA. It was well attended, and I met some wonderful people that were extremely encouraging. I don't advertise these shows much, but I enjoy entering them. I am able to watch and listen to the comments. It is similar to being a fly on a wall, and I am able to conclude whether or not my art is touching a deeper place than just hanging as pretty wall art. I have concluded that it has. I am on the right path.

My son will become a Marine next week, and I wanted to take a moment to say how proud I am of all the young men that are making this choice.
This next week my son will participate in one of the hardest four days in his life. Most people never challenge themselves to this extreme in their lifetime. Please send encouraging thoughts his way. We will be able to call him a Marine on Thursday.

I entered a show today, thinking it was going to be for a silent auction, and was juried in. YEA!
With the added surprise that my work received a Merit of Honor Award. Double YEA!

In the Shadow of an Oak

I will clarify the fact that this will not be used for the silent auction, but for a show at the Aids Service Center in Pasadena. There is also to be a Gala Dinner, called The Big Night Out, same organization. For that I need to donate a work of art. I thought I had to donate work to the auction, to be automatically entered in the show.

So you see, things are a bit forwards, and backwards here in my mind.

BTW, my son is 2.5 weeks away from being a U.S. Marine. Semper Fi

I usually work on an easel or at least have the raised. This time I wanted a lower view, so I am working on the floor. I am sitting on a very low stool, and more breaks are needed so that my back does not get irritated by bending over.

Being white on white, I am taking it slow. Getting up a lot to view it from a few steps away. I think I should get the majority laid in within the next hour. Then some refinement and sign off. Wish me luck.

Taking a quick work in progress photo with my iphone, allows me to get back to work quicker. I need to get some black-out shades but for now, this is my WIP.

My first attempt has been filed away. I pushed the lights too quickly on it and I was not pleased, so I started fresh. Plus, the construction of these basic pumps has confused my eye. Working slowly to get the proportion correct.

The sun has not been shining at the appropriate times, for me to finish "Waiting for the Weekend". I hope to have a finished image before the weekend.

I hope you can see the colors in this white, on white set up. it has been a good learning experience to play the different whites, against each other, and see all the other colors as light bounces off of the fabric.

I began a pastel last night, and it never ceases to amaze me what a few strokes of color will create. Evening light is needed to finish this, but it doesn't need much more. My horoscope today was about mentors. As I am focused, once again on my personal artistic path, it was appropriate that I should receive this in my inbox.

If you have ever considered a mentor, I highly recommend it. Someone that has your personal vision in mind, is a true asset. I found my mentor a couple of years ago. He has become a friend. One that knows that my life journey has been complicated at times, but he is patient. He realizes that I will never be far away from my art. I wrote about it here.

Movin' and Groovin'

I have moved my studio this past week into what was my son's room. When he is home on leave, he will have his room back. The 10 days will be a blink of the eye. For now, I am not going to waste another minute. I finally having a space to call, "My Studio".

It feels quite spacious, but it does need a work table. I am not going to rush this. I will figure out what will be the best for my needs over time. I also don't have any of my art up. My son made some beautiful and creative work in his Digital Photography / Photoshop class. That I have decided will remain up on the walls, as a way to keep him close. This room adjoins a bathroom, and the windows are on the south side of the house. Not the best from an artists standpoint, but the view is inspiring, and I am thankful to be able to finally create a space for ME. As many of my close friends remind me... It is my time now.

Eric turns 20 years old, this Friday. Keep him in your thoughts, as he is trained to push his limits farther than many of us are able to imagine.

Now I am suppose to tell you 7 things that make me happy.

1. The sun shining in SoCA. The light here is spectacular around 4:00. The shadows stop me in my tracks.

2. The connections that I have made on the internet. Sites that have held my hand during medical crisis. Friends that support me while I am creating. High School and College chums that have pulled out old memories I had long forgotten. The University of Google that has allowed me to grow and learn in ways I had never known possible.

3. Whole Foods Market. When you have anyone around you will special nutritional needs, this is a gold mine. I love that they strive to supply the healthiest foods daily. They even have a concierge that will walk around the store with you if you are overwhelmed by ingredient labels and the choices provided.

4. Seeing my daughter dance on the ice rink. Spectacular!

5. Thinking that my son has found his mission in life. Proud!

6. Going out to lunch with my other son, and just talking. Unconditional!

7. Anything that has to do with ART. I have never known a time in my life that I have not been moved to create. I am lucky enough to have found ways to do this on my life journey, which have evolved over time. Now is the time for me to dig deeper, create what I find there, and share it with the world. What an exciting time we live in!

I have been trying to capture a shadow from my Japanese Magnolia tree for a week now. Either the buds were simply not ready to be "caught", or it was raining and hailing, and the petals were knocked off.

Yesterday, I was determined to find the light, and that I did. The buds cooperated. Though most of the blossoms are above my head. I was sure those driving by thought I was quite the sight. Good for them to know that art does not just "happen". Occasionally we work for our inspiration.

I love this tree. My children spent many hours climbing it's multiple trunks, and sitting, watching the world go by. I rarely planted flowers underneath it because I knew it would be trampled. Last week, I had my gardener plant flowers. Then I proceeded to trample them as I was capturing the tree's shadow. Go figure.

It is an interesting tree, because the blooms often fall immediately upon opening. It is my "snow", as the ground is white for a while. I wish there was a way that I could keep the blooms up longer. Yet, that is why we must capture the precious moments, because they are gone too soon.

I am thrilled how this is progressing. I hope you can see the changes that I have made since my last posting. I am very close to completing this shadow picture, and I can't wait to see it framed.
I have some ideas on what I want to dress it up in, but that must wait until I step back and put the pencil down.

I have never worked on multiples at one time. However, I have realized that when I capture the images that I am working with during a plein air session, I need to quickly work on the drawing to put down as much as I remember, from actually being in the moment. I can then return to each and work on areas that call out for attention, and manipulate each drawing to bring out it's own story. I have one that I have yet to share as it just has not spoken to me yet. It just may need to be wiped down and a new story begun. There is still time.

In 17 days my second son, will be leaving for the Marine's Boot Camp in San Diego. I am extremely proud of him, and his decision. Yet, I am going to miss him quite a lot. The next few weeks are going to be treasured. I am sure this too will enter my art in ways I have yet to consider.

Still mapping out a computer plan with my son. In the meantime, I am trying to come up with ways to continue to function. Today, I had an AhHa moment, and decided to take a photo with my iPhone, and make an update with iPhoto. Mini computer in my hand and I didn't even think about that.

I have been working on one of my last organic shadow pieces, before I move more towards a man-made, mechanical grouping. Again, I captured this shadow up in a local area called The Cobb Estate. One of the bushes was stripped bare of it's leaves for the winter, and made some great abstracted shapes on the paper.

In my studio I have been enhancing the depth and flicker of the shadow and light , and I am liking the results.

Funeral For a Friend

My computer has died, so I am unable to access my files, or applications needed to post my current work. Luckily I am told that my work is safe, and now comes the difficult decision as to what to do next. Can't believe how much I rely on my desktop to help me in my creative process.

So for the time, I will be working on my charcoal series and making some choices.

Art is Alive

I have been reading everyone's accomplishments that are being posted, and am grateful to be a part of a community that is so committed to keeping the arts alive. What an interesting time we live in.

I am not interested in posting my numbers here, but I have made note of what I personally have accomplished. My most important accomplishment is the improved health of my daughter. My artwork has been directly affected by those that surround me. My daughter's special needs these past 2.5 years has brought a deeper meaning to much of the work that I have chosen to create. As I watch her heal, I have a greater appreciation for the fragility of life. It will be interesting to see how that shows through in my work during the coming year.

In addition my son will be leaving on February 17th for the Marines. Once again I will have my heart and mind focused in many directions. I hope these emotions will be expressed as well in my artwork.

I have plans written in my workbook to remind me of the direction that I want to move toward.
In addition I have also signed up with Alyson Stanfield to learn practical business tools to take my work to the next level.

Michael Newberry continues to be my mentor, and I am so very excited that he has arranged to move to the west coast. We will be about 30 min away from each other. I plan on using this as incentive to move my art higher still.

I wish you all a wonderful New Year. May you each find the tools necessary to reach as far as you can this year.

A Story Left Untold (Part 8)

I woke up the next day having picked up a bug of some sort. Perhaps my system didn't like the well water. I lay low for most of the day.

Michael had us all put our work out along the corridor and we had a formal comment and critique session. We were to:

Name something that worked well in a painting.
Find one are that you will tweak to finish.
Comment on someone's painting that captures your eye.

It is amazing what you didn't see by those that you worked side by side with. We were all so focused, it made it fun to see each group of works.

I had to say my goodbyes, because my flight was the earliest of the bunch and we decided the best consideration would be for Mary and I to drive back and spend the night in San Luis. She then had to drive back to the ranch after sending me off to pick up the rest of the crew.

I spent the last evening with Mary and Beto. They took me out for another local meal. It was a warm and friendly last night. I am so blessed to have met Mary, three years ago on Wet Canvas. I plan on keeping my promise to Beto. I will return with my family. I know they will pleased with the suggestion.

I know I have rushed the last few days at the ranch. I have a strange feeling that all my memories will fade with the turning of the calendar at midnight.

Onward to new memories and new experiences. I welcome 2009.

A Story Left Untold (Part 7)

I believe we all were exhausted from our field trips, so it was agreed that we would stay around the ranch for our last day of painting. The clouds behaved themselves, and we had some great sun.

Michael decided to begin the day with a demo.

I had a fantastic day finding all the colors in the rainbow, while setting up shop in the courtyard.

Then while Michael and Mary worked wonders on the barbecue, I pulled out the pastels one more time, and captured the afternoon light on the side of the family room wall.

A long day... and I called it a night early. Needing to travel back to San Luis the next day, so I began my packing. It gave me some time to process the prior week.

A Story Left Untold (Part 6)

I am feeling the need to tell this story in its entirety before the end of the year.

Each day I woke refreshed, having sunk into the cozy bed Mary had provided. I was allowed to share her bathroom, so showers were surrounded by a gorgeous navy blue tile. Then the knowledge that a great cup of coffee would be waiting made me move a bit quicker. I always was greeted by Maria's warm smile and fabulous smells from the menu of the morning. Mary was always one step ahead of her, making sure nothing was out of place. I can understand now why Mary did not achieve as many paintings as we all hoped she would.

We hurried and packed our gear into the Suburban, and headed out once again. This time to San Miguel de Allende. I was really looking forward to this excursion. Mary and I had talked about it often. I had never heard about this city before I met Mary. One night I did a Google search and looked at all the B&B's, since they usually have great local photographs. So I was particularly looking forward to the visit.

Once again we stopped along side the rode to paint, and the clouds were absolutely stunning. Michael offered a challenge to all of us. For some reason he and I were not communicating well that day, and to let go of the tension he suggested that I make a throw away painting. I have to admit, I don't approach my work as something to keep or not. It is the process where I find my greatest rewards. I usually don't even know if it is a keeper for days after creating it. This particular view, I was captured by the layers, and how each land mass hid the one behind. That is why I titled it Hidden. There was also a lake in the distance, hidden behind some brush.

I remember also something that had created tension with me that day. My easel had collapse and all my paint and turp had landed in a heap. Not a great way to begin painting when you have limited time, and the expectations of someone that seemed at odds with yours. So I just turned my mind off, to all that was around me, no critical thoughts could enter my head, even if they were my own. I looked toward the one place that had elevated my spirits, and found the most glorious cloud mass. It must have known I was there, because it did not move. Or if it did, time stood still for me while I painted it. The shadows were lilac, pink, violet, plum, eggplant... I had such fun with this piece, and I think it shows. I titled it Cloud Nine, because that is how I felt when I was done.

Our travel to San Miguel was quick and easy. I can say that, because I was not driving. Once again, no time for site seeing. In for lunch and back out once again. This is one place I would have liked to have explored for an hour. Gives me all the more reason to go back for another visit. I did promise Beto to bring my family the next time.
We had a wonderful Mexican lunch, music made conversation difficult, but the margarita made up for it. It must have been a favorite, since each table was filled along with the bar. I believe Mary had made reservations for us, since a table was waiting in the corner.

After lunch we headed back toward the ranch. Michael keeping an eye out for one more spot to paint

I know this worried Mary quite a bit. She was certainly not use to this type of painting and was concerned about our safety. For those of us that have painted in some questionable places, this was paradise. Michael spotted some great fields framed by a row of trees. I enjoyed this view quite a lot. We spent about one hour painting by the side of the rode, then we were instructed that we needed to be on our way home. When traveling, it is important to listen to those that are familiar with the safety factors.

The day ended around the kitchen counter, then one by one we closed our doors.

A Story Left Untold (Part 5)

I left off as a rain cloud spoiled our fun, while painting near
Mineral de Pozos.

We closed up shop as fast as we could and headed for the car. Gave a nice tip to the woman watching our belongings, and headed for lunch. Mary had a specific place in mind, so we let her lead the way. The town is quite rustic. Dirt roads, and store fronts that appeared to be no more than a wooden garage door propped open. With Michael along, there were no plans made for peaking inside any of the shops. Eating and art making were on the schedule, which truly was fine by me.

We arrived at a open door, walked down some stairs into a paradise of color. The center courtyard was open to the beautiful sky, and the rooms surrounding it held more private eating areas. We were seated in a room with only two tables, but we had views toward the garden and courtyard. The owner couldn't have been more pleasant, as he shared stories of how he and his wife had acquired the structure, and spent 3 yrs creating the Bed and Breakfast, and restaurant.

The food was spectacular and after a private tour of the rooms, we all were ready for a return trip with a loved one.

On our return trip back to the ranch, we searched for another spot to pull over. However, our hostess encouraged us to return to the ranch, as it was late afternoon, and the weather was unpredictable. So we each did another painting, of the local landscape, and called it a day.

Yet the day was not over. After we cleaned up, and changed out of dusty clothes, we enjoyed crackers and local cheeses from Mary's daughter-in-law's family dairy, our beverage of choice. Along with other great food that slips my mind at this moment. All I know is we never went hungry. In a group like this there are challenges to keeping everyone's needs met, and Mary did a fabulous job doing so.

We told more stories into the late evening. My dreams were of the wonderful clouds I had painted that day.

A Story Left Untold (Part 4)

Thank you for being patient. The holidays are taking up my spare time when I am not creating.

Upon rising we would gather in the "great room" and drink our coffee. Taking in the wonderful smells that Maria was creating. Mary was never far away, directing each meal. We were all so lucky to sit at her table. Fresh papaya, quesadillas, eggs, salsa, warm breads, and much more that I am not remembering at the moment.

We then took our time to pack up our painting equipment. Something that I had done the night before, as I am notorious for forgetting something important. We began our trip out for the day, and headed for an area Mary had suggested to Michael call Mineral de Pozos. We pulled over a few times, and finally found ourselves along the side of a road where there were ruins of old structures. We were taking in the views, when we heard a voice from nearby. Mary was having a conversation with a woman who obviously had set herself up as the caretaker of the area. She had some homemade items to sell, and she was selling her services to "protect" our belongings. She pointed out for us to be careful not go near the shafts to the mines. I looked over the edge of one, and OH MY...it took my breath away. I could not see the bottom of it.

Michael set up shop and found a lovely view to offer us a demonstration. The sky was changing often, as the clouds moved rather quickly.

A Story Left Untold (Part 3)

I was just trying to remember what day it was but I guess it really doesn't matter, since I didn't think much about what day it was when I was there. I think Mexico does that to you. You get up and work hard, and then at the end of the day, you sit back with a cool drink in hand, and let the warmth of the sun edge its way down to your toes.

At this point, Michael had arrived. Elizabeth, Kirsten, and Sandra came along with him.
We began the morning with a strong cup of coffee, and a hardy breakfast. Believe me there was never a shortage of food. We were far from any convenience store, so Mary had provided us with everything we could imagine... and then some.

Michael took some time and did an extended painting while he discussed his process along the way.

Bull Ring by Newberry

The sky was threatening to rain, but when the clouds cleared, it was extremely sunny and warm. So when I was deciding on a view to paint, I headed into the bull ring. How often do you get to paint in a working bull ring? Well.. I never had before.

Now I know why... when the sun was out and it was warm... the flies were in abundance.
I worked as long as I could manage the heat and the nuisance, but then I called it quits.

After a short break, I took my supplies toward the side of the property. I guess this is actually behind the wall of the bull ring I had painted. Here is the view that I saw. The earth was such a gorgeous color there.

We ended up the day with a fabulous meal, a bit of tequila, and great stories all around.
